BFFS National Conference for Community Cinemas 2009

The third National Conference for Film Societies and Community Cinemas took place on the weekend of Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September at various venues in Sheffield.This year’s conference was an exciting event, packed with plenty of films, training sessions and networking opportunities.
The wide-ranging film programme including many independent titles with introductions and Q&As by British filmmakers Jan Dunn (at an exclusive pre-release screening of The Calling) and Ian Hawkins (My DDR T-Shirt), who gave an insight into the filmmaking process and their financial and artistic challenges.
Recognising the importance of sector-specific training and networking, BFFS delivered sessions by and for film societies and community cinemas. The 2009 conference encompassed two themes, innovation and education. Saturday was Innovation Day, featuring: From Film Society to Festival, The Role of the Film Society in Digital Britain, Community Connections and the Student Cinema Workshop.

Sunday was Education Day, and BFFS welcomed film educator John Salisbury (Ventnor Film Society), who delivered a film noir-themed presentation and a workshop on how to construct a DIY film education talk tailored for film societies and community cinema audiences.
The 2009 BFFS Film Society of the Year Awards, topped the weekend off on Saturday night as delegates gathered in the stunning Winter Gardens and Millennium Galleries to celebrate the year's acheivements. Read more about this fantastic evening.

The BFFS National Conference is the only national event dedicated to the needs and interests of film societies and not-for-profit community cinemas. We hope to see you next year!
