BFFS is extremely excited to present a very special screening of the seminal British film This Is England, in partnership with Warp Films with Film Unit as venue hosts on 1 April 2014 in Sheffield. BFFS Patron and Head of Warp Films, Mark Herbert, will be on hand to introduce the screening, and will also be taking part in a Q&A afterwards with the stars of the film Thomas Turgoose (Shaun) and Andrew Shim (Milky). This is very special evening to help BFFS raise funds for our charitable work, and we are honoured to be supported by Warp Films.
This Is England, directed by Shane Meadows, was selected in a vote by the BFFS Membership, the film societies and community cinemas in the UK who work tirelessly to bring British and Independent cinema to their local communities.
Set in the Midlands in 1983, the film focuses on Shaun, a 12 year old who is bullied at school and frequently teased about his father who died in the Falklands. Shaun falls in with a group of skinheads led by Woody, who quickly takes Shaun under his wing. When former friend Combo returns to the group after a stint in prison, his aggressively nationalistic and racist views threaten to tear Shaun's new friendships apart.
This Is England is one of Warp Films' most successful films to date, and has led to 3 follow up TV series, the latest of which,This Is England '90 is currently in production.
We will also be screening two shorts from the Warp Films archive – Paddy Considine’s BAFTA award winning Dog Altogether (2006), and Dr. Easy (2013) from filmmaking collective Shynola, plus we will be offering one lucky person the chance to win one of the exclusive limited edition Warp 10 boxsets, kindly donated by Warp Films, featuring 10 of their most popular films and a deluxe 206 page behind the scenes book. More details of this competition, which will take place via Twitter, will be announced very soon.
The screening will take place at Film Unit, at the University of Sheffield Students' Union. Film Unit is one of the oldest student cinemas in the country and a long-standing member of BFFS.
