Julie Christie Visits Louth Film Club!
Louth Film Club Chairman Alex McMullen reports on a visit by the beautiful Julie Christie, who braved a wintery February night to speak about her recent success in Away From Her.
Julie Christie attended Louth Film Club’s recent screening of Away From Her at the Playhouse Cinema in Louth, Lincolnshire, afterwards answering questions from a 170-strong audience, about her Oscar-nominated role and about her career as one of Britain’s greatest screen actresses.
Miss Christie has friends in Louth, including a member of the club who asked her if she’d be prepared to do a Q&A session at the screening of one of her films. Much to everyone’s surprise and delight, because she is known to dislike public appearances, she agreed.
Away From Her is a film she is clearly very proud of and was happy to watch again because of its great great script, by the film’s director, Sarah Polley. Directors were a recurring theme in her answers. It’s who the director is that decides whether or not she will accept work in films. She talked about the many great directors she has worked with, such as John Schlesinger (who gave her her first two big roles, in Billy Liar and Darling), David Lean, François Truffaut, Robert Altman, Nicholas Roeg and Kenneth Branagh.
On the day that Guantánamo Bay prisoner Binyam Mohamed returned to the UK, she also talked about the work she does for Reprieve, which campaigns for prisoners’ human rights and whose lawyers have been representing 30 Guantánamo inmates. Reprieve is one of many political and environmental causes with which she has been involved.
